A parent member is required by Part 200 of the State Regulations. A parent member is a critical participant on the CSE process to assist the parent in making educational decisions regarding their child. While the CSE requires a parent member per the regulations, a parent can always decline the participation of the parent member.
What do you expect the parent member to do at a committee meeting?
The role of the parent member is to:
- Advocate for the child’s needs - Support the parent(s) and explain the process as needed - Provide feedback from a parent’s point of view - Seek clarification and explain to the parent as needed - Participate in decisions as an equal member of the committee Why is it important to have a parent member on the CSE?
Parents may feel more comfortable speaking with and asking questions to a parent member. It has been my experience that the CSE can sometimes be an intimidating process for a parent. It is critical to make parents feel comfortable and parent members can assist in doing this. It is in the best interest of the child if everyone participates and understands what is taking place.
