A Journey of Hope, Growth, and Advocacy

When a local family began navigating life with their 5-year-old son, who has a learning disability and speech delay, they felt the same uncertainty many parents do when entering the world of special education. Like so many parents walking a similar path, they wanted the very best for their child but weren’t sure where to begin. The process of finding the right services, understanding special education, and preparing for kindergarten felt like entering an entirely new world.

That’s when they discovered Parent Network of WNY. While preparing to enroll their son in kindergarten, the family learned about OPWDD and decided to reach out for guidance.

“Given Parent Network’s strong reputation and positive reviews, we felt confident and supported in taking the next step in our journey with their guidance,” the family shared.

With the help of Parent Network, they began to understand the resources available to support their child’s development and how to navigate the OPWDD process. The Parent Network team worked with the family to create goals that focused not just on challenges, but on their son’s strengths and potential.

“We realized how much support and information was available to help families like ours navigate the system. Their support made us feel empowered and confident in our decisions.” the family stated.

As the family learned more about available services, they also began to learn more about themselves. They realized that being a parent of a child with disabilities isn’t just about seeking help, it’s about learning how to advocate, ask questions, and trust your instincts.

“We became more aware of our child’s unique needs and potential, and we recognized the importance of advocacy. It also helped us acknowledge that we weren’t alone in this journey—there’s a strong community ready to help guide us.” they reflected.

Through their experience, the family’s outlook completely changed. They no longer felt like they were navigating the unknown—they were leading with knowledge, confidence, and purpose. They learned to focus on their child’s strengths instead of limitations, and to celebrate every bit of progress along the way.

“This experience not only changed how we support our son—it changed how we view ourselves. We are stronger, more resourceful, and more empathetic toward other families in this journey. Having the knowledge and guidance from Parent Network helped reduce our stress and allowed us to better balance the support our child needs,” they said. “It gave us peace of mind and reaffirmed how important a support network truly is in all aspects of life.”

For this family, connecting with Parent Network didn’t just open doors to services—it opened their eyes to what’s possible. It reminded them that while every journey is unique, no parent has to walk it alone.

Their message for those parents is simple, but powerful:

“To any parent who feels overwhelmed or unsure where to turn—know that help is out there. Parent Network reminded us that we’re not alone, and with the right guidance, every step forward is one worth celebrating.”

Because every family deserves to feel supported. Every child deserves to be seen for their strengths. And every step forward—no matter how small—is something to celebrate.
