Exploring New Technology Through Inclusive Feedback

By September 8, 2026No Comments

This summer, Parent Network of WNY was contacted by Black Onyx Management, which is an organization that connects companies to organizations that can help inform product development, to host a focus group to test Meta smart glasses and provide feedback on how this emerging technology could enhance the lives of people with disabilities. Meta smart glasses are AI-powered wearable eyewear that combine normal frames with built-in cameras, open-ear speakers, and voice assistants for hands-free daily tasks.

We were thrilled to invite our friends from People Inc.’s Young Adult Life Transitions (YALT) program at Hilbert College to join Parent Network staff for this exciting opportunity. People Inc.’s YALT program is a community-based training service that helps young adults with developmental disabilities prepare for competitive jobs and daily independence. Participants tested the glasses’ features and shared thoughtful, practical feedback based on their own experiences, needs, and preferences.

The discussion explored how smart glasses could potentially support greater independence, communication, access to information, navigation, organization, and participation in everyday activities. Participants also identified possible challenges, including comfort, accessibility, privacy, cost, ease of use, and the importance of having clear instructions and personalized support.

Their feedback reinforced an important message: When technology is designed to support people with disabilities, their voices must be included throughout the development and testing process. Individuals with lived experience are uniquely qualified to identify both the possibilities and the potential barriers that developers may otherwise overlook.

The focus group was a wonderful example of what can happen when businesses, community organizations, professionals, and people with disabilities collaborate. By creating opportunities for meaningful participation, companies can develop products that are more accessible, useful, and responsive to the people who may benefit from them.

The day ended with an exciting surprise—two lucky participants received a pair of Meta smart glasses for their own personal use!

Parent Network of WNY is grateful to Black Onyx Management, People Inc.’s Hilbert College YALT Program, and every participant who shared their time, experiences, and valuable insight.
