Becky’s Empowerment Discovery

By November 7, 2024No Comments

Becky’s adventure as a mother to her 9-year-old son Jaxon, who has ADHD, ODD, and vocal tics, has been one of deep transformations. Feeling overwhelmed and defeated, Becky was at a loss for how to help Jaxon find happiness and success. “I was feeling like a complete failure and totally defeated as a parent,” she recalls. It was at this crucial moment that she connected with Parent Network through an email about their Family Empowerment Series, a decision that would change everything.

Through this series, Becky found not only education but also a community of parents facing similar challenges. “I was able to see and meet people that were dealing with the same issues and that we weren’t alone,” she explains. This sense of camaraderie was vital, but it was the wisdom she gained that empowered her to act on Jaxon’s behalf. Equipped with new skills, she confidently entered Jaxon’s Committee on Special Education (CSE) meeting. “Parent Network taught me the ‘language’ of the processes out there,” she notes, emphasizing how critical this knowledge was in advocating for her son.

One of Becky’s proudest achievements was successfully advocating for Jaxon to move from a 504 plan to an IEP, a challenging transition that many parents find difficult. “I realized just how strong and determined I am with making sure Jaxon has every chance and opportunity available to help him,” she says, reflecting on her newfound resolve. The experience changed her perspective, helping her understand that she had not failed Jaxon and that there was hope for a brighter future. “Knowledge is power! I realized that there can be a bright light at the end of this long dark tunnel,” she states confidently.

Since completing the Family Empowerment Series, Becky has become a different person. “I am more confident when I walk into those CSE meetings than I ever was before,” she shares. This confidence extends beyond meetings; it has also enabled her to teach Jaxon the importance of self-advocacy. “I can understand the ‘language,’ advocate for Jaxon, and show Jaxon how he can advocate for himself,” she emphasizes, showcasing the impact of her education.

The positive changes in their lives have been significant. “We have found ourselves moving up instead of falling down,” Becky explains, noting the improvements in Jaxon’s ability to manage his impulses and emotions. This progress has been reflected not only at home but also in school, where Jaxon now feels more engaged and enthusiastic about learning. “He even comes home saying how much he likes school. This is a huge difference from last year,” she beams.

Becky’s time with Parent Network has instilled in her a sense of empowerment and the belief that she can advocate effectively. “I now like to refer to myself as polite but persistent,” she says, highlighting her transformation into a confident advocate for her son. The information she has gained has not only helped her navigate the complexities of special education but has also inspired her to encourage other parents in similar circumstances. “I would tell them that Parent Network is a great support system and can help build confidence,” she informs.

Grateful for the journey she has undertaken, Becky reflects on the hope that now fills her days. “I just can’t express my gratitude enough for Parent Network. We are moving forward, something I didn’t think was ever going to happen for us,” she concludes, embodying the empowerment and resilience that has come to define her family’s path forward.
