By April 15, 2024No Comments

This week Erie County Executive Mark Poloncarz held a press conference to proclaim this week, April 6-12, 2024, The Week of the Young Child. This annual event, sponsored by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) provides the opportunity to formally celebrate young children and thank the early childhood teachers and everyone who is involved in the care and education of young children. Our Executive Director, Kimberly Kadziolka, was invited to speak at the press conference to share her thoughts on this week and the important impact of early childhood education, early intervention, and quality childcare.

Kimberly shared, “It is essential that we shine a spotlight on a cause that lies at the very heart of our society – the importance of education, and the policy initiatives necessary to advance childcare, early intervention, and early childhood education. The earlier holistic development of a child is started, the better, because the interests they develop during this time stay with them throughout their lives. The early childhood years, from birth till age eight, lay the foundation for a child’s later success in their academic and social life. Therefore, the thoughtful investment in a child’s education during these years can go a long way.  As we celebrate the Week of the Young Child, it’s imperative that we recognize the critical importance of ensuring that every child, regardless of ability, receives the support and resources they need to thrive.

The mission of Parent Network of WNY is to support families and professionals to empower individuals with disabilities to reach their full potential.  We provide support and education through resources, workshops, and support groups that assist families of children with disabilities navigate the support service system, ensuring their child has all the resources needed to succeed.”

The Week of the Young Child serves as a reminder of the profound impact early childhood experiences have on a child’s lifelong journey. These formative years lay the foundation for future success, shaping not only academic achievements but also their emotional well-being and social interactions. However, it’s crucial to acknowledge that some children face additional challenges on this journey.

Every child, regardless of their abilities, deserves access to high-quality early childhood education, early intervention, and care. We must invest in inclusive environments that foster acceptance, understanding, and individualized support. This means equipping educators and caregivers with the knowledge and tools to effectively meet the diverse needs of every child under their care. It also means actively advocating for policies and initiatives that prioritize early intervention and support services for children with disabilities and delays.

When we commit to supporting children with special needs during their formative years, we are not just investing in their future – we are investing in the future of our community and broader society. Every child has boundless potential and talents waiting to be nurtured and unleashed. By providing them with the support they need today, we are empowering them to become tomorrow’s leaders, innovators, and changemakers.

As we reflect on the significance of the Week of the Young Child, let us recommit ourselves to creating a world where every child, regardless of ability, can thrive and reach their full potential. Together, let us build a future where inclusivity is not just a goal but a fundamental principle that guides our actions and shapes our society.
