Ava, a 14-year-old who was born prematurely at just 24 weeks and spent six crucial weeks without amniotic fluid, faced significant challenges from the start. These early complications led to a series of disabilities, including dyslexia, auditory processing disorder, and physical impairments. Despite these hurdles, Ava’s story has been one of remarkable perseverance and gradual triumph.

Ava’s mother, Ann, connected with Parent Network after being referred by a friend and struggling with school district services. “My friend told me to reach out to Bonnie because we had issues with the school district. They denied us services last year and they were still fighting us with everything.” Despite initial setbacks, Parent Network’s advocates, like Bonnie and Michelle, played a crucial role. “Michelle kept pushing, kept fighting…Otherwise I would have given up,” said Ann.

Parent Network has been instrumental in securing OPWDD services for Ava. “We started probably in May or June of last year, and they kept denying us. It was like a donut hole, with all this red tape.,” Ann explained. “The support from Parent Network has been life-changing, helping us provide Ava with resources and services she previously lacked. The fact that we got OPWDD, which started the other day, is amazing. It means she’ll have support for the rest of her life, which is incredible, all thanks to the help of Parent Network.”

The impact of Parent Network’s support on Ava’s life and her family’s well-being has been profound. Ava now has access to a broader range of services, including financial assistance for therapies and a Community Habilitation Program. This support not only eases the financial burden but also provides Ava with the tailored help she needs to thrive.

Ann notes that connecting with Parent Network has transformed their approach to managing Ava’s care. The organization has provided invaluable guidance, reducing the stress of navigating various services and helping Ava’s family focus more on her well-being. The assurance of having a knowledgeable advocate to answer questions and guide them through the process has been a significant relief. “The number one lesson I’ve learned is don’t give up,” Ann states.

Reflecting on their journey, Ava’s family has learned the importance of persistence and the value of having a supportive network. The experience has highlighted the systemic challenges families face and the critical role organizations like Parent Network play in bridging gaps and advocating for those in need.
