Emily’s journey with Parent Network began long before she joined their team. Aware of their reputation as a lifeline for families navigating special needs in education, Emily found herself reaching out for her son to receive his OPWDD eligibility, which was granted this past May. This milestone marked a turning point in Emily’s understanding of the support available for her children, both of whom navigate autism and ADHD.
Initially uncertain about their eligibility due to their severe physical needs, Emily’s conversation with Michelle at Parent Network shed light on the broader spectrum of support services available. “Michelle helped me understand that delays in other areas could qualify my children,” Emily shared. This revelation opened new doors for her family, providing access to services they hadn’t previously considered.
Reflecting on the impact, Emily remarked, “There are so many aspects of life where kids can have delays that you don’t realize until you talk to someone like Michelle.” Michelle’s empathetic approach and insightful questioning made discussing difficult topics easier, fostering an environment where Emily felt understood and supported.
Beyond practical benefits like after-school programming, Emily highlighted the emotional reassurance of knowing she isn’t alone in planning her children’s futures. “Parent Network really is just there to help,” Emily emphasized. “If you’re hesitant to reach out, you don’t have to worry about being judged or worry about someone not understanding what you’re going through.”
The process of securing OPWDD eligibility, which typically can be daunting, was streamlined with Parent Network’s assistance. “After doing paperwork and getting all the information, from the time the work was completed it was less than 3 months for them to get their eligibility,” Emily recalled gratefully. With both her children, Emily sees a future enriched by newfound possibilities.
Encouraging other parents who may hesitate to reach out, Emily advises, “If a parent isn’t sure if their child will qualify for something, just contact Parent Network and ask…If they can’t assist directly, they will find another place that is able to help you. They will try very hard to make sure you don’t just float in the wind.”
Today, both children are thriving, a testament to Emily’s dedication and the unwavering support of Parent Network. As Emily looks ahead, she remains grateful for the clarity and community Parent Network has brought to her family’s journey. “It’s helpful for parents and families to know that they are not alone,” Emily insists.
In Emily’s story, we find a narrative of empowerment, resilience, and the transformative impact of community support—where every family’s journey is met with understanding and advocacy, ensuring no child or parent walks alone.
