One Family’s Journey to Finding the Right Support at School

By April 9, 2026No Comments

When Chris and Taryn’s daughter began struggling at school, they knew something wasn’t quite right — but they weren’t sure what steps to take next. Their daughter, now 9 years old and in 3rd grade, was diagnosed in 2025 with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and ADHD. While the diagnosis helped provide clarity, it also opened the door to a new and often overwhelming journey: navigating special education services.

Following the diagnosis, their doctor recommended connecting with Parent Network as a trusted resource for families navigating the special education system. That recommendation became a turning point.

As the family prepared to meet with the school to determine eligibility and develop their daughter’s Individualized Education Program (IEP), they found support every step of the way. Through Parent Network, they attended support groups, connected with other parents facing similar challenges, and scheduled one-on-one support meetings with their Family Support Specialist, to review their questions and talk through the process ahead of time.

When the day of the meeting arrived, they didn’t have to face it alone. Their Family Support Specialist attended the meeting alongside them, helping ensure their concerns were heard and their daughter’s needs were clearly communicated.

“We were far more informed and prepared thanks to the resources provided by Parent Network than we would have been on our own,” the Neyman’s shared.

Beyond preparation and advocacy, Parent Network also helped the family realize they were not alone in their experiences. Connecting with other parents provided reassurance and validation during what had been a stressful and frustrating time.

“It is a relief to know you don’t have to do it alone and there is a whole organization dedicated to helping parents support their kids effectively.” they explained.

Before connecting with Parent Network, the family had begun to lose hope. After several difficult school years, they were considering removing their daughter from public school altogether, believing she might never feel comfortable or supported in that environment.

But with the tools, knowledge, and confidence gained through Parent Network, their outlook began to shift.

After a productive IEP meeting, their daughter was placed in a new classroom with more positive supports in place — a change that has already made a meaningful difference.

Today, the family feels hopeful about their daughter’s future. What once felt overwhelming now feels manageable, and they are confident that school can become a place where their daughter can thrive.

“If you are feeling overwhelmed, you are not alone. Parent Network can connect you with the right resources and the right people to help you take the next step in your, and your child’s journey.”

Looking back, the family says it’s hard to overstate the impact Parent Network has had on their lives.

“Parent Network helped us feel like we fit in somewhere and has given us the tools and confidence to advocate for our wonderful daughter — to help others see her needs not as a burden, but as an opportunity.”
