Parent Network of WNY Honors Disability Awareness Month

BUFFALO, NY- Parent Network of WNY is involved in a wide range of conferences, workshops and events this month in honor of Disability Awareness Month. Starting each October, Disability Awareness Month is celebrated throughout Western New York where the community comes together to increase awareness and promote independence, integration and inclusion of all people with disabilities. Along with various partners, Parent Network of WNY, is involved in over 30 events in October including Same Page Conference, Helping Learners Unlock Their Potential Conference and The 3rd Annual AT (Assistive Technology) Expo 2014 and Harvest Honors in November. The Same Page Conference, Looking Beyond the OPWDD Horizon, the future of services for persons with developmental disabilities will be held on October 23, 2014 at Lucarelli’s Banquet Center, 1830 Abbott Road, Lackawanna, NY 14218, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Topics for the conference will include OPWDD START Program, Spectrum Home Health, Erie County Child Protective Services, Protective Services for Adults, Telemed, Benefits and more.

This conference is for Medicaid Services Providers, social workers, parents, persons with disabilities and other interested professionals and is being presented by the WNY and WNY Social Workers for People With Developmental Disabilities. The cost is $30 per person. Lunch is included. MSC CEUs will be available.

The Helping Learners Unlock Their Potential Conference will be held on October 25, 2014 at Daemen College – Business Building, Room 107-109, 4380 Main Street Amherst, NY 14226, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. The keynote speaker will be Dr. Ellen Arnold.

Participants will gain an appreciation for the emotional impact of LD (Learning Disabilities), experience simulations of what having LD is like and understand how to effectively support someone with LD. This conference is being presented by Parent Network of WNY and The Thomas Reynolds Center for Special Education. This conference is free to attend. Lunch is included.

The 3rd Annual AT EXPO 2014 (Assistive Technology) will be held on November 19, 2014 at Millennium Hotel, 2040 Walden Ave., Cheektowaga, NY 14225, from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The AT Expo “Implementing Technology, From Smart Homes to Smart Supports” speakers will include Greg Wellems, Katrina Fulcher and Sheila Buck. The AT Expo is being sponsored by Parent Network of WNY, Early Childhood Direction Center (ECDC), People Inc. and Learning Partners. The AT EXPO cost is $150 and includes vendor interaction; CEUs will be available for mobility and communication tracks. Lunch is included.

Harvest Honors is Parent Network of WNY’s annual event, which will be held on November 20, 2014. Harvest Honors 2014 will serve as the Re-brand and website launch event for Parent Network of WNY and will include interactive digital stations, an awards reception, cocktails and appetizers, a theme basket raffle and other giveaways. Harvest Honors also serves as the Annual meeting for the agency. The new website is designed to become the Western New York destination for support, education and workshops on disabilities, special education and services and will offer the most comprehensive calendar of events and news in the community. All are welcome to attend.
